Precision laser and white light scanning is often used for preserving and analyzing the actual geometry of the object at the center of product litigation.

Early in the investigation, prior to any destructive testing, the scanning process captures the exact form of the part (as a digital point cloud containing millions of points) which can be archived as an STL file.  The object is modeled using a NURBS process, and exported as a STEP or IGES file (readable by any standard CAD program) for viewing, demonstration in the courtroom, or for further interrogation.  The suspect part can also be compared against a known part or “perfect” CAD model to determine unwanted wear or damage.

Precision scanning preserves the detail of a crime/accident scene with remarkable precision, yet very quickly. With 3D recreation, jurors and investigators revisit the scene in a way that is impossible with traditional documentation.

Chain-of-custody is a key concern in the course of any product litigation case. Evidence handling is often very delicate. The QC Group is well suited to accommodate such special requests.
